If you are an entrepreneur who has the time, the money, and the resources to help improve the healthcare system, how would you do it? Would you invest in healthcare companies that create new medicine? Or would you help form a health tech startup that revolutionizes the way healthcare system uses data to improve treatment and increase the longevity of patients? Eric Lefkofsky chose the later when he co-founded Tempus in Chicago. The company’s main goal is to improve the way that electronic data is collected and used to treat and cure cancer and other diseases.
Tempus uses its technology to make it easier for patients’ clinical and medical data to be generated, collected, and analyzed in efforts to fight cancer more effectively and to make it more accessible and affordable. As a result, healthcare providers can prescribe appropriate treatments to their patients and they can figure out the effectiveness of certain treatments. Lefkofsky co-founded Tempus after his wife, Liz, was diagnosed with breast cancer. While helping her fight the disease, he was alarmed to discover a gap between data collection and digital technology and he hopes that Tempus will close this gap.
Lefkofsky was originally Southfield, Michigan and moved to Chicago where he currently lives. He graduated from University of Michigan in Ann Arbor with high honors. He obtained the Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School but pursued entrepreneurship in the tech industry instead of law. He went on to form or help establish other innovative companies, such as Lightbank and Echo Global Logistics.
Both he and Liz run the Lefkofsky Family Foundation and donate money to several charities. He serves on the Boards of Trustees at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and the Art Institute of Chicago. He also serves as a Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater Company. In addition to charitable work, Lefkofsky also contributes his time to education. He currently works as an adjunct professor at the University of Chicago, helping his students to take entrepreneurship to a whole new level.
